Midong (1999), 9m58s

Suk-Jun Kim

Midong (a Korean word) is translated as “a motion or a movement that is so small that you are not sure of it.” This piece is mainly driven by the propensity of circulation and the characteristics of a few discernible sounds. The unity of the piece is therefore maintained by these continuous, yet still movements and characteristics of the sounds that are in memories. Another important character of the piece is silence that gives it an understated rhythm, and works as one of the factors that bind the piece as a whole.

The piece won a first prize in the 28th International Competition of Electroacoustic Music and Sonic/ Bourge 2001,Trivium A, 1st Category, A second prize in the ASCAP/SEAMUS Student Composition Competition, 2001 And a public prize in the first Biennial Acousmatic Composition Competition in Belgium, 2000.
