DEEP LISTENING
AKOUSMA begins with a mythical figure of the American electronic music scene. For several years now, Pauline Oliveros has been promoting Deep Listening, a behaviour based on active listening, and Réseaux and AKOUSMA have been promoting this very form of active listening too. Better known for her improvisations on the accordion, she will be presenting a program of her best tape music works. This evening also celebrates Mitchell Akiyama’s return to the Montreal scene with a new work for electronics and wind instruments commissioned by Réseaux.
« The intimacy of her electronic compositions suggests parallels with John Cage's statements about silence »
— The Wire (UK)
« The noises and corrosion are like the barnacles, rust and seaweed acquired by a ship over years of ocean-going »
— BBC (UK)

ACOUSMATIC
Lately, electroacoustic music has been celebrating a lot. Réseaux will be celebrating its 20th anniversary next year; the mythical Québécois label empreintes DIGITALes is celebrating its 20th this year, and the 60th anniversary of musique concrète is barely behind us. Mathew Adkins is highlighting all of that in his masterful [60]Project, to which 60 artists have contributed, including Francis Dhomont, Christina Kubisch, Tim Hecker, and Christian Zanési, among others. On our side of the Atlantic, Martin Bédard is one of the most faithful advocates of the acousmatic tradition, and we are proud to present his first-ever full-length solo concert in Montréal !

"MACHINES"
Following up on his successful performances (Projet pupitre, L’horloger, La chambre des machines), Martin Messier takes the dialogue between antiquated object and electronic music further, and presents an orchestra… of computer-controlled sewing machines ! Félix-Antoine Morin continues to praise the machine, drawing his inspiration from Industrial music as much as musique concrète.

FOLKTRONICA
Here are two artists borrowing shamelessly from popular and experimental music. Sinebag is the nom de plume of Alexander Schubert, a young and prolific composer. Under that moniker, he is developing the “popular” facet of his artistic work, pairing acoustic instrument with electronic treatment. As for Nicolas Bernier, he will be presenting his latest work, a blend of folk and electroacoustic music, with the participation of guitarist Simon Trottier.
