Andrew Staniland is a composer and guitarist. Recent commissions include works for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and Toca Loca. Staniland’s music has been praised for its sensitivity to timbre, and sense of dramatic gesture. He holds a doctorate in composition from the University of Toronto, and has received several awards for his work, including six prizes in the SOCAN Foundation Awards for Young Composers (2002-06), the 2004 Karen Keiser Prize in Canadian Music, and the 2004 Toronto Emerging Artist Award. Staniland has been appointed Affiliate Composer with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for the 2006-07 season.
